![]() ![]() ![]() Taubes’ latest book, The Case Against Sugar, looks to be less controversial than earlier anti-sugar campaigners’, if only because so-called guardians of public health have of late subtly re-emphasised in government eating guidelines the role of sugar as a dietary villain, adopting what Taubes calls the “we knew it all along” approach. ![]() I’ve discussed the sugar vs fats debate in other articles but if you are interested in reading more, I like what Gary Taubes (among many others) is saying. Our national sugar habit is now understood to be the driving force behind the diabetes and obesity epidemics. ![]() The kind you eat matters less than people once thought the amount matters much more. It’s sugar, in its many forms: white, castor, brown and raw sugar, honey, golden syrup, maple syrup, glucose syrup, you name it. It is all around us - in obvious ways and hidden ones - and it is seductively delicious. It is in tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, chicken stock, sliced cheese, bacon and smoked salmon, in mustard and salad dressing, in crackers and nearly every single brand of commercial bread. ![]()
